People looking to gain more control over their personal spending habits often start by taking a close look at the various services for which they pay. The telephone bill is a common starting point--and for good reason. The telephone (whether land line, cellular or both) is a service that most people could not justify doing without. Because telephone service usually falls into the category of "necessities" on the budget list, comparing telephone companies and the value of the services they provide can lead to significant savings.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide if you want a land line, a cellular phone or both. Some of the major telephone service providers offer both types of phone service and offer savings packages to those who buy service for both. If you regularly use both, it makes sense to see which telephone companies offer the best incentives for a combined subscription.

  2. Step 2

Factor in your Internet needs. Many people access the Internet in their homes by way of the company through which they get home telephone service. As is the case with subscribing for cellular and land line service through one phone company, adding Internet access to the subscription is another way to combine services and save money. Combinations like these are often referred to as bundles, and comparing the bundles offered by different phone companies is an important consideration.

  3. Step 3

Track your usage. Long distance service may play a big role in your life, and when you don't choose the best plan for your specific long distance habits, you risk wasting money. Check what long distance packages are available from various phone companies.

  4. Step 4

List the add-ons you anticipate needing. Telephone companies offer all kinds of extra features to their service plans, such as call-waiting, caller ID and call forwarding come standard with many plans but may carry a charge with others. Determine your add-ons before comparing telephone companies and you'll have an easier time staying focused on what is essential.

  5. Step 5

Look for the websites of the telephone companies you plan to compare and find the descriptions of the service plans they offer. Compare each plan against the assessment of your phone needs. Choose the company that best meets your ineeds in the most cost effective manner.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speak directly with a customer service representative if you have narrowed your choices to two. Tell him you need a reason to choose their company over the other and he may be able to provide you with an extra incentive.
