The fall foliage season begins anywhere from mid-September on and extends into late October, depending on the region and variety of trees found there. The earliest changes occur at higher elevations, with peak foliage locations beginning north and moving south as the season progresses. There are lots of activities (other than walking and driving tours along scenic country roads) that families can enjoy together throughout the fall season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take pleasure in the spectacular colors of fall foliage from a hot air balloon or train ride excursion. Each provides an experience that neither you nor your children will forget. Your journey is guaranteed to be breathtaking and memorable.

  2. Step 2

Attend an apple festival that features handcrafted items and demonstrations by artisans in quilting, spinning, basket weaving and pottery making. At some farms, you can even watch a sheep shearing.

  3. Step 3

Find out about other fall festivals scheduled in your area. These can be great educational outings for children. Learn from craftsmen like blacksmiths dressed in period costumes working with period tools. Take advantage of living history by taking in antiques and collectibles displays, civil war encampments or battle reenactments, along with other activities related to the era.

  4. Step 4

Visit a cider mill and watch cider being pressed the old-fashioned way. Don’t forget to taste-test some fresh, hot apple cider. Another alternative is to make reservations to visit a vineyard and winery. Events offered usually include tours, wine tasting, shopping, live music and maybe even some grape stomping.

  5. Step 5

Travel to a local farm that hosts an annual pumpkin festival. Most offer scenic tours, riding in either a tractor-pulled or horse-drawn hay wagon that includes a trip out to the pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkin.

  6. Step 6

Plan another fall outing to a cornfield maze. More than just a walk through the cornstalks, children and adults both find this outdoor adventure entertaining as they follow clues to find their way out.
