Step 1
If your baby is conscious and seems to make good progress, don't try to interfere with your baby's coughing. Place her in a sitting position to cough out the object.
-
Step 2
Interfere only if your baby has a weak cough and breathing difficulties. Put your right arm on your thigh. Place your baby on your right arm. Make sure that her head is lower than her body and your baby's head forms a 45-degree angle with your body. Hold your baby's jaw between your thumb and index finger. Give five firm blows to your baby's shoulder blades.
-
Step 3
Turn your baby around and use one hand to support her head and neck. Put two fingers on her chest, just below the nipples and push about 1-inch deep. Give her 5 consecutive chest thrusts.
-
Step 4
Alternate between 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object is removed.
-
Step 5
Call 911 if your baby is unconscious. If somebody else is also there with you, tell her or him to call 911 instead. While waiting for emergency assistance, put your baby on her back, tilt your baby's head gently and lift her chin. Keep her mouth open. Make sure that your baby is breathing by observing the chest or check the air from her mouth against your cheek.
-
Step 6
If she does not breath, cover her mouth with your mouth and give her two slow rescue breaths. If her chest does not rise, give her back blows and chest thrusts. If you see the object in her mouth, use one hand to hold your baby's tongue and jaw, lift the jaw and use the other hand to remove the object.
