Things You'll Need:
- bamboo stakes
- wire
- needle nose pliers (with cutter)
- hot glue gun & sticks
- medium light gauge wire OR twine (your choice)
- "S" hooks
- Safety goggles
- Work gloves (optional)
-
Step 1
First step1. Assemble all your materials. I usually try to get the natural bamboo, however if this is not available you can go to the local discount store and buy a package of those green bamboo garden stakes for less than $3.
-
Step 2
Grid layout2. Measure the area where you want your trellis or rack to hang. Next cut 5 bamboo pieces the width of the area and cut 5 the heighth of the area. Then lay these pieces out as a grid, making sure that the 2nd and 4th vertical pieces are at least 16" apart. (This is where you will later attach your loops for hanging. Standard wall stud placement is 16" apart, so this will aid in hanging your finished piece).
-
Step 3
Glue every joint3. Beginning with the center bamboo piece, dab some hot glue wherever the pieces meet. Do one entire length at a time and then press together. This will keep your piece steady so you can secure the joints with your wire or twine.
-
Step 4
4. Using your needle nose plier cutters, cut 25 pieces of wire 12" long and cut an additional 2 pieces (for the hanging loops) this same 12" length.
-
Step 5
Front view - wire wrap5. Next, wrap your wire (or twine) around each joint beginning at the front of the joint. Make an X shape and then coil the wire (or twine) around the top and sides of the joint. Tighten in back using your pliers and make sure you tuck in the wire ends.
-
Step 6
Twisting the wire6. When all joints are wrapped, make your two hanging loops. Using your 12" length of wire, fold in half. Clamp both open ends firmly in the teeth of your pliers, then start twisting the wire with your other hand until you are left with a 1" loop at the other end. Now, do the other loop the same way. Attach both to the #2 and #4 joints at the top of your trellis (marked with an arrow in step 2 picture).
-
Step 7
Bamboo Plant Trellis7. Hang your trellis or rack. Use drywall anchor screws (a brand called EZ anchors is EASY) if you can't find a stud; otherwise, a screw will do fine. If this is a pot rack, scatter your "S" hooks and hang your pots. If a plant trellis, simply start weaving the vines in and out. Your plant will do the rest as it grows. You're done!
