Make your own barbecue sauce from scratch.

Move the next level of barbecuing by creating your own pit-style sauce. Start with a basic recipe, then tweak the ingredients and proportions to bring out your favorite flavors. For example, you could substitute honey for sugar, add sugar for a sweeter taste, or make it tangy by using the juice of 1 lemon or increasing the vinegar. This recipe makes 2 quarts of sauce. Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 pound butter
  • 16 ounces ketchup
  • 16 ounces vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 1 small bottle Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon onion juice
  • 1 1/2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • Dash red pepper
  • Dash black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salt

      Measure all of the ingredients into a large pot.

      Bring the mixture to a boil and then turn the heat down and simmer 30 minutes

      Use on chicken, ribs and pork. Refrigerate leftover sauce but discard any that touched raw meat or was used for basting..

Tips & Warnings

  • honey may be substituted for sugar

  • juice of one lemon (3 Tablespoons of lemon juice) can be added for tang.

  • add more sugar for a sweeter barbecue sauce or,

  • more vinegar for a tangier barbecue sauce
