Imperfections in the exterior paint of your home can be unsightly and reduce the value of your home. Fortunately these imperfections are relatively easy to correct.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You may need some of the following.
  • sand paper
  • paint, oil or latex
  • shellac
  • scrapers
  • thinner
  • basic carpentry tools
  • muriatic acid
  • sealer
  • fillers
  1. Step 1

    IF YOUR PAINT IS PEELING

There is some contaminating agent under the paint.

Scrape away all the loose paint. Sand area smooth.

If your exterior is masonry, apply a sealer and then repaint.

If your exterior is wood, repaint, after sanding, with latex.

  2. Step 2

IF THERE ARE STAINS IN THE SURFACE PAINT

These result from fasteners under the paint corroding. The rust has leached through the paint to the surface.

Sand away all the stained area. Sink the fasteners. Fill the depressions and repaint.

  3. Step 3

IF YOU HAVE EFLORESCENCE THAT HAS PRODUCED A WHITISH DEPOSIT ON THE SURFACE AS WELL AS PEELING

This is a result of leaching from some compound under the surface. This often occurs with mortar and masonry.

To remove the leached material, scrub the surface with a dilute solution of muriatic acid. Use a stiff bristle brush.

When working with even a dilute solution of muriatic acid, WEAR GOGGLES, GLOVES AND LONG SLEEVES.

Rinse area thoroughly. Apply a masonry sealer. Repaint.

  4. Step 4

IF YOU HAVE BUBBLES OR BLISTERS IN YOUR PAINT

Under the blister, there is either moisture or paint that has been unable to dry.

    Cut away the bubbles paint.

If there is undried paint here scrape it away.

Leave any moisture to dry completely.

    Sand and repaint.

It is best to repaint when area is not in direct sunlight so it does not dry too rapidly and repeat the problem.

  5. Step 5

IF YOU HAVE WRINKLES APPEARING IN YOUR PAINT

These will often appear soon after your paint has dried. They result when you put on your first coat of paint too thickly. Unfortunately the problem area is often extensive.

Sand the area thoroughly. Repaint with thinner coats.

  6. Step 6

IF YOUR PAINT IS BEGINNING TO SHOW AREAS THAT APPEAR CHALKY OR POWDERY

Scrub the old paint job well. If the area is extensive it will be easier to power wash.

Do any necessary repairs to make your surface smooth and paint-ready.

    Repaint.

  7. Step 7

IF KNOTS OR GRAIN ARE BEGINNING TO SHOW ON THE SURFACE

Theere is resin seeping from these areas so their outlines become visible.

Sand down to the surface of the wood.

Seal with a 2 pound-cut shellac, and repaint.

  8. Step 8

IF A MAP-LIKE PATTERN OF CRACKS APPEAR ON THE PAINT SURFACE

Your surface was not prepared or primed properly.

Scrap and sand off all cracked areas.

Fill any uneven areas. Sand smooth. Prime if indicated.

    Repaint.
