Things You'll Need:
- Internet
- Research
- Classes
- Other grant writers
-
Step 1
GET EDUCATED: If you want to start your own grant writing business you need to educate yourself. Depending on how much you know about writing grant proposals, this could take some time. When you write a grant proposal you want it to be unique and stand out in the crowd. If it's not unique the grant review board will move on quickly.
-
Step 2
NETWORK: Talk with other grant writers to see how they got started. Did they take classes, what classes would they recommend for you to take? What type of research did they do to learn how to write grant proposals? How many times were they turned down before they got an approved grant proposal? They will be able to encourage you and let you know what to expect when you write a grant proposal.
-
Step 3
MARKET YOUR BUSINESS: Become a member of local organizations and programs to let people know what you are doing so that you can land your first job. Start an online portfolio and join online organizations and job boards for freelance writers to get jobs.

on 8/11/2009 The best way to learn grant writing is to read over a "grant for dummies book" the to volunteer as a grant writer helper at a non profit. IF you have an idea of what type of grant writing you would like to specialize in contract similar non profits. If you have no ideas start in common categories such as children charities or non profit hospitals. One should probably five grant writing projects with at least two wins before attempting to freelance as a grant writer. However most organizations will not look at grant writers that does not have at least ten grants and six wins under their belt. Marketing the business is easy as letting the organizations you volunteered for know you are writing. If you did a good job not only will they consider your services but they will also give networking organizations you info. In most cases all you have to do is let them know you have time to take ...

on 10/8/2008 Good information regarding the grant writing business. Writers need to be careful about getting paid only if the submitted application for a grant is approved. Thanks for the article.
