Be sure you start with a proper attitude. Remember its more important to God why you are doing something, than what you do. Have the following attitudes. Expectancy - You must come before God with anticipation and eagerness. Expect to have a good time and receive a blessing from your time together. Reverence - Prepare your heart and be still before Him. Let the quietness clear your daily worries and thoughts of the world away. Do not rush God's presence. Alertness - Be wide awake. You are going to be meeting with the Creator, be rested and alert. Get your rest each day so you are prepared and in good shape to meet God. He deserves your full attention.

You need to select a specific time. This includes when and how long it should be. The best time is when you are at your best! You should always give God your best part of the day. Jesus's practice was to pray and meet with the Father in the morning. "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed" (Mark 1:35.)

Willingness to obey - Don't come to your quite time expecting what you will or won't do. The purpose is to do anything and everything God wants you to do. "If anyone chooses to do God's will he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own" (John 7:17.)

Tips & Warnings

  • Whatever time you set, be consistent.

  • Mark it on your schedule/calendar.

  • Look forward to it and don't stand Him up.

  • Its suggested by Robert D. Foster, Seven Minutes with God, NavPress, 1997, to start with 7 minutes and let it grow naturally. Aim to eventually spend no less than 15 minutes a day with the Lord.

  • Remember, your best time of the day may not be someone else's best time of the day.
