Buy in Bulk from a Club Warehouse Store
Buy in Bulk from a Club Warehouse Store

Buying in bulk can save you lots of money, if you shop wisely.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Club Warehouse Store memebership
  • money
  • some muscles to push those big, heavy shopping carts around!
  1. Step 1

If you don't use a lot of an item but it's a great price, consider sharing with a neighbor or friend. (I like maple syrup just as much as the next person, but do I really need several gallons of it?!)

  2. Step 2

Compare prices between the items you can get at your supermarket and the prices you can get at the warehouse club. Sometimes grocery stores allow double coupons or have a great sale which can be cheaper than the warehouse price.

  3. Step 3

Make sure a club warehouse card is a good purchase for you. They usually cost around $40 a year (depending on where you go and what kind of membership you get). If you're only going to go there once every so often, it may not be a good investment. I buy items there for my invitation business anyway, so buying food items is a bonus for me.

Make sure it's not a long distance away. If the club warehouse is quite a drive, you might be spending too much on gas to even get there and back.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you have storage room for your bulk purchases. If you don't have a lot of space, you can combine open packages, sort through your cabinets and fridge and throw out old items you don't use, or even stash you items in unusual places (under the bed, in a dresser drawer, in a suitcase, etc.).

on 10/27/2008 Gread advice. Knowing prices is key. Sometimes is it cheaper to buy 6 items from Walmart with a coupon than to buy a sixpack at a member's club. Thanks for the article!

on 10/23/2008 Good info. I think that a lot of people just assume that warehouse shopping automatically saves you money, which, as you point out, is not always the case. I like the idea of sharing w/neighbors too. Thanks!

on 10/22/2008 Good tips. I shop at a bulk warehouse about once a month. There are definitely some items that I don't buy there because I can get them cheaper at the grocery store or sometimes I can get a different brand that works just as well for a cheaper price. Like you said, it is essential to comparison shop.

on 10/10/2008 I appreciate step #2 about comparing what it would cost if you went down to the corner store and had coupons, would it cost you less. The club warehouses draw from a long distance so most of the time it is much further than your regular grocery store. Nice article - good things to consider.
