Is low humidity lurking in your home?

Is your skin dry and itchy? Are your lips chapped? Does your hair feel like straw? Low humidity in your house could be to blame. It may also be the reason why you can't fight the chill even though you keep increasing the thermostat. Worse yet, low humidity increases your risk of getting a cold or upper respiratory illness (since the low humidity dries out the mucous membranes in your nose and throat). Follow these simple steps to find out if your house has low humidity.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a drinking glass
  • 4 ice cubes
  1. Step 1

Put four ice cubes in a drinking glass.

  2. Step 2

Place the glass in a room and wait three minutes.

Preferably, choose a room where you spend a fair amount of time in, such as a bedroom or living room. Do not choose the kitchen or bathroom, since water usage in these rooms may affect the low humidity test.

  3. Step 3

After the three minutes are up, check the glass for water.

If there are beads of water on the outside of the glass, your house has passed the low humidity test and the humidity levels are fine. If there are not any water beads, this is an indication of dry air.

on 11/14/2008 Great information - we have a wood stove that literally sucks moisture from the air, now I can prove to my husband an investment in a cast iron kettle is worth it! :) Thank you!
