Eat an Artichoke
Eat an Artichoke

You are at dinner and presented with this green, leafy cluster. What do you do with it? Read on! These instructions are for a steamed or boiled artichoke.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a napkin
  • melted butter or other dip
  • a fork
  1. Step 1

For the outer leaves, pluck each leaf off individually. Dip on butter or other dip. Put each leaf between your teeth, soft side or inside down. Gently bite down and pull downward on the leaf to scrape the inner part of the leaf off. Lay the old leaf on a plate a pluck a new one.

  2. Step 2

As you move towards the center of the artichoke, you will notice the leaves become more edible and you maybe be able to bite pieces off. Most people will trim the tops and clean spiny parts when preparing it. Do watch for spiny tops on the leaves if any was overlooked, but for the most part the leaves will be more edible as you get closer to the center.

  3. Step 3

Once the leaves are gone, you reach the heart and base of the artichoke. Most are cleaned of the spiny parts. If you do find a set of spiny hairs at the heart, use a knife to peel or scrape them off. The heart can then be cut in sections and dipped in melted butter.
