  1. How to Plan the First Few Days Home After Giving Birth

    • 1

Speak to family and friends before the birth of the child so that they are aware of your expectations for visitors in the first few hours and even first couple days after the baby is born. Having family and friends around to help can be a blessing. However, if you do not feel as if you will be up for much company in the beginning, let everyone know.

Plan ahead for meals to get you over the hump of the most hectic days after bringing your baby home. You will not have the time or energy to be thinking about a menu once you are home. In the days leading up to your due date, you could prepare some casseroles and place them in the freezer. Another option is to ask for or accept offers from friends and family to supply some meals for your family for a couple days after the baby comes home.

Make sure you will not be alone the first few days after you and the baby are discharged from the hospital. Hopefully your husband will be off work for a few days after the baby is born. If your partner or spouse cannot be home, make arrangements with family and friends so that you have someone with you until you are recovered enough to be home alone with the new baby.

Have the baby’s nursery ready before coming home from the hospital. Prepare the nursery a few weeks before you due date in case your child decides to arrive early. You do not want to have a crib and changing table that is still in boxes when you arrive home.

You will probably find that you are very busy in the days before your baby is due. There is a lot to do when preparing for a new baby. However, you must try to get as much rest as you possibly can before your due date. As everyone knows, there are likely to be many sleep-deprived nights ahead once your baby arrives.
