Save

A licensed practical nurse, often abbreviated as LPN, is a trained professional nurse who is able to care for patients and perform some medical procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). As the demand for nurses is expected to increase, becoming an LPN is a good career move with good opportunities for future advancement. There are two schools in Brooklyn, New York, that offer a licensed practical nurse certification program for adults--Medgar Evers College and the Brooklyn Adult Learning Center.

  • Have a high school diploma or GED. You will also need to be at least 21 years of age to attend classes with the adult learning center.

  • Apply to take the program's pre-admission exam. This is a 150-question test that will include questions to assess your reading, numerical understanding, and language ability. You will need to apply before the annual deadline, and then you will receive further information about when you can take the test.

  • Pass the pre-admission exam on your scheduled test date. You will then be allowed to continue with an application to the LPN training program, which will include an interview.

  • Complete the training program after you have been accepted. Expect to spend 9 to 12 months on the training, which will involve theoretical and clinical experiences.

  • Submit an application to the New York State Board of Nursing to take the NCLEX LPN licensing exam. You will need to pay a fee and have the learning center submit evidence of your completion of the educational requirements. You will also need to register with Pearson VUE in advance before the test. Once you have passed the test, you will be eligible to work as an LPN in New York State.
