Thanksgiving Dinner

Most families gather together on Thanksgiving Day to eat a large meal and spend time with each other. They may be enjoying each other's company, but they are not focusing on what Thanksgiving is all about. Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and being grateful for all that you have. There are ways that a family can get together and incorporate giving thanks on this special day.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bible
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Basket
  • Pencils or pens
  1. Step 1

Read the story of the first Thanksgiving to the children while some of the adults are still preparing dinner. You can borrow children's books from the library. Feel free to ask the children questions about what you have read them to see if they understand the importance of Thanksgiving.

  2. Step 2

Dress some of the children up like Indians and some of them like Pilgrims. Have them eat together this way to re-enact the first Thanksgiving dinner.

  3. Step 3

Give each family member a slip of white paper before dinner begins and have them write one thing they are thankful for on it. Then have them place that paper in a basket. At the beginning of dinner, read each strip of paper out loud to the group.

  4. Step 4

Have each family member state one thing they are thankful for about the person sitting to their left when the meal is over. That way you started and ended the dinner giving thanks.

  5. Step 5

Help the children make cards for their teachers. Sometimes we can forget about all of the hard work that they do. Teachers will really appreciate such a gift.

  6. Step 6

Volunteer at a soup kitchen or donate money for another family to receive a meal. This will help you to be thankful for what you have.

Tips & Warnings
  • Saying grace before the Thanksgiving meal is a way to express gratitude. Acknowledging the people who grew the food, brought it market and the people who purchased and prepared the meal for us to enjoy is a way to be thankful.
  • Look up some verses on Thanks in the Bible. There are free online concordances you can use and find the verses in a matter of minutes. You don't even need a Bible because it will give you the verses and you can just print them out. Read these verses to your family after dinner.
