Step 1
Invite several of your children's friends, but make sure an adult comes with them. Since you'll be cooking it's easier, safer and a lot less confusing if you have some extra adult helpers. Your children can make the invitations. Just get an apple stencil and let them cut the invitations out of red construction paper. Or get personal, and hand deliver the invitations. All you have to do is attach a note to a shiny red apple. Encourage the children to come in costumes.
-
Step 2
Buy plenty of apples. It really doesn't matter what kind, so you can choose a variety. Smaller apples will be cheaper and easier to work with than large ones.
-
Step 3
Have a plan. You'll want to use the assembly line approach. If you have a long kitchen counter, seat the kids there. You could also set up card tables. Since there will most likely be a mess, cover your floor if you're concerned about it.
-
Step 4
Find an easy recipe for candy apples or use this one. You can mix about four cups of sugar, 3/4 cup of corn syrup and 1-1/2 cups of water in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Add a few drops of red food coloring. When your candy thermometer reads 290 degrees, you're set. Since this will take a while, you probably want to have one of the moms organizing games or songs for the kids so they won't get impatient.
-
Step 5
Decorate the apples. Insert a popsicle stick into each apple. Let the kids dip their apples into the syrup. They can decorate the apples by rolling them in a variety of toppings. Have chopped nuts, sprinkles, mini-chocolate chips, coconut and anything else you can think of. The kids will have a ball doing this, because they can let their imaginations soar.
-
Step 6
Stand the apples upright on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. When they're dry, each little goblin can help you wrap his apples in plastic wrap and tie a Halloween inspired ribbon around the step.
