Step 1
DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB
If you are currently working for someone else as a bookkeeper, consider adding a client or two on the side before you quit your job. You'll feel more secure with even a small client base before you take the plunge and quit your job. -
Step 2
GET TRAINING
If you don't currently have any bookkeeping training, check out the programs available, both online and in your community. Choose one and get some basic training under your belt. -
Step 3
BECOME CERTIFIED
A certification in bookkeeping will add to your credentials and make potential clients more confident in your abilities. The AIPB (American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers) offers low cost certification. -
Step 4
BEGIN MARKETING
Start spreading the word that you are available for work. You may want to begin with other small business owners who don't want to do their own bookkeeping, but aren't larger or profitable enough to do it in house.
Other sources of potential clients are accountants or other bookkeepers who have overflow work. -
Step 5
DEVELOP A NICHE
You may find it easier to find clients if you develop a niche or specialty. It will instill confidence in your potential clients and make word of mouth marketing easier as well.
