Compare the coverage area. Many cell phone companies offer the pay-as-you-go service but they may not reach the coverage area you need. TracFone for instant's works better in the New York metro area but fades when callers move too far north. Verizon, on the other hand, appears to work in areas where TracFhone failed.

Analyze how the pay as you go service determines its rates. Some charge on a per unit basis whereby they charge one rate for local calls and another rate for roaming calls. Other pay-as-you-go services allow for free calling between cell phones within the same network and charge for calls outside of the network.

Consider the people within your regular calling network. If you have a circle of friends that all use the same network, then finding purchasing a service that has free calling within the network would be financially feasible. Compare that text messaging rates. Find out if there are additional charges for text messaging. TracFone, for instance, includes text messaging at ½ a unit while Verizon charges anywhere from 2 to 10 cents depending on the plan (these rates are subject to change).
