How to Make Bagels With A Bread Machine

You do not have to go to a bakery to get great bagels. Make your own bagels using a bread machine. This makes for a wonderful treat to eat fresh and freeze what you do not eat.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/8 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 quarts boiling water
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 1 egg white
  • 3 tablespoons poppy seeds
  1. Step 1

    Mix salt, sugar, yeast, and flour and yeast to gather, pour in water then place in the bread machine pan. Select Dough setting.

  2. Step 2

    When cycle is complete, take dough out of machine and let dough rest on a slightly floured surface. While waiting continue to next step.

  3. Step 3

    Boil 3 quarts of water in large pan, stir in 3 tablespoons of sugar.

  4. Step 4

    Cut dough into 9 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a small ball, then flatten. Poke a hole in the middle of each piece. Cover bagels with a clean cloth or plastic wrap. Set dough aside to rest for 10 minutes.

  5. Step 5

    Sprinkle baking sheet with flour or cornmeal.

  6. Step 6

    Individually add bagels to boiling water. Let boil for 1 minute, turning half way through. Let bagels sit on a clean towel to drain for a minute or so.

  7. Step 7

    Arrange boiled bagels on baking sheet. Brush tops with egg white. Add toppings to your liking.Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degree F oven until well golden. Baking time differs in every oven but averages 15 to 20 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Let the bagels cool completely and store in a airtight container in the freezer to keep for a later date.
  • Homemade bagels can be addictive.
