Make Veggie-Packed Dog Biscuits

This tutorial offers you a yummy dog biscuit recipe made of common ingredients that even pups with sensitive tummies may eat!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • all ingredients for the recipe
  • ability to cook and bake
  • ability to operate a kitchen oven and small kitchen appliances
  • parchment paper
  • knowledge of food poisons for dogs
  1. Step 1

Preheat oven to 350-degrees. While preheating the oven, mix the following ingredients:

    1-cup all purpose flour
    1-cup whole wheat flour
    2-cups shredded carrots
1 bunch fresh parsley, finely chopped

The moisture from the vegetables will help the ingredients become crumbly, however you will need to add extra liquid to create a true dough. Although you may add sparing amounts of ice water, you may also want to try carrot juice or another non-toxic vegetable juice.

NOTE: Using a food processor will cut your time in half in this.

  2. Step 2

Continue to mix ingredients until a dough forms. Lightly flour a counter top, as you will be rolling the dough out to cut it into shapes. Roll dough out to a thickness with which your pet is familiar. For example, smaller mouths (dogs under 10 lbs.) prefer thin treats that are no more than 1/8th of an inch in thickness. Larger (dogs over 80 lbs.) mouths prefer very thick treats (such as 1/2 an inch).

Either use cookie cutters to cut shapes into your dough, or simply use a knife to cut dough into a grid-patter which will yield many square or rectangular treats.

  3. Step 3

Do NOT grease a cookie sheet to bake treats on! (Only certain types of oils are acceptable for your dog.) Instead, line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Place dough shapes on parchment lined cookie sheet. No need to space dough pieces far apart because these treats do not increase in size as they bake (they do not include yeast).

  4. Step 4

Baking the treats will vary in length depending on the thickness of your treats; therefore, you will need to watch the treats closely after 30 minutes of baking time. Remove treats from oven when they are crispy and/or golden in hue.

For small treats, the bake time will be approximately 30-45 minutes.

For larger treats, the bake time will be approximately 60-75 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative and add other vegetables or fruits that your pet likes. But do ensure that the vegetables and/or fruits are not toxic or poisonous. Please refer to the Warnings, below, to double-check that you are aware of all toxins and poisons for your dog.
  • Human foods that are toxic to dogs: grapes or raisins, chocolate (any type), macadamia nuts, pear seeds, plum pits, peach and apricot pits, apple seeds, mushrooms, persimmons, raw eggs, raw fish, yeast dough, rhubarb leaves, potato & tomato leaves or stems, potato skins, any alcohol, and any vegetable from the onion family (onions, garlic, green onions, onion powder, etc.)
  • Human foods that are bad for dogs: milk and dairy products (too much can lead to diarrhea), animal fat, fried foods, caffeinated foods (coffee, coffee grinds, coffee beans, tea, soda), pear skins & stems, citrus oil extracts, any moldy food
