Correct Flaking Paint
Correct Flaking Paint

Flaking paint is not only an eye sore, but it can be dangerous if a child picks it up, or pet eats it. Read on for some tips to correct flaking paint.....

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Flaking paint is commonly caused by moisture, so you should find the source of where it is coming from.

For example, if the paint is peeling in your bathroom, there is a possibility that one of your pipes is leaking.

  2. Step 2

If it is a leaky pipe you will need to call a plumber to fix the problem (if you're not handy) or if you are handy, you can fix it yourself (and save some money!)

You should also determine at this time if you should add attic louvers or exhaust fans to help prevent any future moisture build up.

  3. Step 3

Now you need to scrape and sand any paint that is flaking. Remove the paint approx 12" in all directions beyond where the paint is flaking.

Then sand the surface all the way down to the part of the wood that's not painted, and use an undercoat to prime the area that you just sanded.

  4. Step 4

After sanding, caulk any holes & cracks that you see. This will protect the sanded area from moisture.

  5. Step 5

When the caulk had dried completely, you can apply one (or two) coats of house paint.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always keep children & pets away from paint
  • Always use proper ventilation when painting
