Things You'll Need:
- Bag of dried Split Peas
- Clove of Garlic
- 1 Large Onion
- Stalk of Celery or dried celery flakes
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable base
- 1 Tomato
- 1 Can of diced carrots
- Salt and pepper to taste
-
Step 1
Soak your Split Peas in a pan of water overnight.
-
Step 2
Rinse, put split peas back in pan and cover with water.
-
Step 3
Add Garlic, Celery, onion and vegetable base.
-
Step 4
Bring to a boil, turn down the heat and cook about 45 minutes and then add tomato.
-
Step 5
Cook about 15 minutes longer and add carrots. (If you use real carrots put them in at the beginning) Simmer until the Split Peas are soft. We don't like our Split Pea soup totally mushy you might. Cook until you feel they are the desired texture.
-
Step 6
Serve up and enjoy.

on 10/18/2008 P.S. Apropos my earlier comment, I went to visit mom in NY, and not only did she serve up her wonderful split pea soup (exactly, evenly as good as yours!), but she gave me a few containers to take home. Life is good.
