Summer is ending, and maintenance needed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A place to clean the filter
  • Spray hose
  • Some soapy water and sponge
  1. Step 1

Turn off unit. Remove the cover from the front of the air conditioner to locate the filter. The cover will have either screws or easy to remove push tabs to get to the filter. Once you have the front off set it where you plan to do the cleaning. Outside with the hose is ok, or in the kitchen sink if it isn't too big.

  2. Step 2

Next remove the filter, and take it to the place you are cleaning. We sometimes vac the front before taking completely apart. Saves some on dust and grime. Now you can either use a pan of soapy water on the filter and cover, or just hose it off with a fine firm mist.

After cleaning, let it all dry completely. Then replace the filter and the front cover.

It you wait too long to clean these filters and vents the effeciency of the unit will go down dramatically. And you are breathing through dust.

  3. Step 3

The filters of all units that run with fans should be cleaned at least monthly. If you have more than one unit, do them all at the same time so you don't forget how long it has been on each one.
If you remove the unit during winter months, a good thing to do is spray off the outside of the unit to remove all the summer dust and grime before storing for the winter.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you hear a whistle coming from a unit it has been too long since cleaned. So take care of that pronto.
  • Always turn off unit before doing any maintenance.
  • Let all the cleaning water dry completely before assembling it again.
  • Keep the controls in off position at all times during cleaning. Never unplug unit from outlet before turning off switch.
  • Most units need to be off at least 5 minutes before turning on again.
