Survive a Road Trip With Small Children

Travelling in the car with small children can be quite challenging! The following steps have kept my children entertained and my husband & I sane on our road trips!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are going on a very long car ride, try to schedule your travel around nap time so that your little ones will sleep a good portion of the way.

  2. Step 2

Invest in a portable DVD player (some can be found for under $100) and use a DVD to keep the kids entertained part of the way.

  3. Step 3

If your road trip is very long, break it up into 2 days to limit the amount of time spent in the car. Try to find a hotel with a pool so you can all get in some exercise after being cooped up in the car all day.

  4. Step 4

Make a mixed CD of songs everyone likes. There's nothing worse than listening to the same songs over and over. CDs are a good way to make a vast mix of songs for both the kids and the parents!

  5. Step 5

If the kids are sleeping - keep driving! Don't waste those precious moments with sleeping kids at a rest area. Keep moving and schedule your next stop for when they are awake.

  6. Step 6

Ahead of time go to the dollar store and buy some "prizes" for the road. Wrap them and put them in a box or bag. At set intervals like every 100 miles, every hour or every 20 exits, let each kid pick a "prize" from the goodie bag

  7. Step 7

Pack plenty of small fun activities for the kids. Doodle pads, crayons, etch a sketch, small toys, card games can help keep the kids entertained. Only give them one activity at a time to play with.

  8. Step 8

Play car games. There are lots of places online that you can download car bingo, word searches and other games. Or you can play the classics -I Spy & the License Plate Game.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to pack healthy snacks and lots of water for all your passengers!
  • Stop a few times to let all passengers stretch their legs
  • Also pack a small travel sized pillow and a lap blanket for each kid. Keep them comfortable and they'll be less likely to whine!
