Step 1
So you work for a small company. Every year one lucky co-worker gets the daunting task of collecting a dollar amount from each employee for the bosses Christmas gift. This has been done every year and will keep going until the end of time - or will it? Maybe this tradition has started to get under your skin. The resentment towards this "tradition" is even more understandable if your boss does not give the employees a Christmas gift. After all one would assume that you as an employee makes less than your boss (or worse yet the owner of the company) so why should the employees be expected to buy the boss a gift if it's not reciprocated? What would Miss Manners say? If your co-workers agree there are some great ideas to get out of this!

Step 2
1. Collect a small amount from each employee and donate the money to a charity in the company's name. In the bosses card a small note can say: Happy Holidays! In the spirit of giving, we have made a donation in _insert company's name here_ to Make A Wish. (Or the charity of your choice.) With this method everyone is happy! 2. Collect the money to purchase something for the break room that the whole office can enjoy and share. 4. Include the boss in an office grab bag or secret Santa. The last option, of course, is to just stop the work place gift giving all together and spend the money on your own family!

Step 3
If your boss does give each employee a gift every year it's only proper to give them a gift in return. As said before, your boss makes more than you. Your gift for them does not need to be extravagant, but it should reflect their likes and personality. If your boss is a coffee drinker, maybe a nice gourmet coffee would make a good gift.

Step 4
An additional thing to keep in mind is that gift giving should be a fun thing done for the people that you like. Nobody should give gifts out of obligation.

on 10/6/2008 I used to have the job of collecting and purchasing the gift. Not a fun job. I love the charity donation idea!
