Recycle charming vintage trays into a custom magnetic bulletin board for your home office, kitchen, or entryway. No tools required!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vintage metal tray(s)
  • 3M Command Strips Picture Hanging Strips
  • Magnets
  1. Step 1

Determine where your magnetic bulletin board will hang. Measure the space and decide how many trays you want to hang, and their arrangement.

  2. Step 2

Start searching for vintage trays at thrift stores, rummage sales, antiques shops, and online sites like Ebay. You can search for a set, or purchase mismatched trays for a more eclectic look. Expect to pay anywhere from 50 cents at a thrift store up to about $15 per tray at an antiques store.

  3. Step 3

Lay the trays on the floor and decide how they will be arranged. Lightly mark their placement on the wall with a pencil.

  4. Step 4

Join two of the 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, peel off the adhesive backing, and affix to one upper corner of the tray. Repeat with the other upper corners of each tray.

  5. Step 5

Remove the second adhesive backing from the tray to be positioned in the top left corner. Carefully eyeball the position so the tray is level, then press it into the wall, exerting pressure at the location of the picture hanging strips. Repeat with remaining trays, leaving the desired amount of space (or easier yet, no space at all) between trays.

  6. Step 6

Affix paper items and photos to the trays with magnets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't worry if trays are not in perfect condition. The items you hang on them can cover flaws.
  • If you don't trust your eye, make a level line on the wall with a level and pencil or a chalk line before placing the trays on the wall.
  • Find magnets that coordinate or contrast with the trays.
  • If you decide to remove the bulletin board, the 3M Command Strips will not leave a mark on your wall. And no holes to fill!
  • Follow the weight limits on the package of 3M Command Strips if you are hanging very large or heavy trays on the wall.
