Things You'll Need:
- Car
-
Step 1
Reduce the number of times you accelerate - I have read many articles in which they suggest that your drive at or below 55 miles per hour. If you drive on the freeway (interstate), you know that doing this is impossible. Try and get to your desired speed and then use cruise control to stay at that speed. Curbing your acceleration can save you as much as 30%, according to Edmunds.com.
-
Step 2
Maintain your maintenance plan - A healthy person tends to eat less food The same thing is true for automobiles. Keeping your vehicle running efficiently can save gas. According to the Department of Energy, simply replacing an old air filter can improve your gas mileage by 10 percent.
-
Step 3
Keep your tires properly inflated - I have seen so many cars driving around that have almost no air in their tires. Keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage as much as 3 to 5 percent.
-
Step 4
Tighten your gas cap - I would have thought this was obvious but millions of gallons of gas are loss each year due to simple evaporation. When you fill your tank, ensure you close the cap nice and tight.
-
Step 5
Search the internet - There are many web sites that track gas prices in your state. Find and visit these sites before heading out so that you will not pay too much for your gas.
