Things You'll Need:
- Uniform pant and basic hangers, a color wheel or natural color coordination.
-
Step 1
Work ClothesTaking an honest wardrobe audit is the first step to getting better performance from your closet. Work Clothes, Chic Simple Guides, 1996. Get rid of anything you no longer wear or like or need.
-
Step 2
Restrict your closet based on the current season. If it is Fall/Winter, only allow Fall/Winter garments into your closet space. When it is Spring/Summer, remove all the Fall/Winter clothing, store it, and replace it with Spring/Summer items.
-
Step 3
Sort clothing into the following categories (as applicable): pants, shirts, dresses, skirts, jackets.
-
Step 4
Then divide these categories into (a) casual and (b) dressy/professional wear. For instance, if you had items for each of the 5 categories above, and then you follow this step, you will now have 10 groups of clothing.
-
Step 5
the Lucky shopping manualHang everything on like hangers; similar in color and style is the best and makes your closet more visually appealing, and easier to use. The Lucky Shopping Manual, Kim France adn Andrea Linett, 2003, states that “a row of matching wooden hangers has amazing motivational effects. And when clothes hang neatly, they take up less space.” .
-
Step 6
Then you want to now place all clothing back into closet, but do not force it. If some garments do not fit then you will have to resort to folding some items (I would suggest the casual items), storing clothes in dressers or another closet.
-
Step 7
Color-coordinate the clothing based on the categories created. So if it is Fall/Winter, you want arrange your clothes from Winter Whites to the Basic Blacks.
-
Step 8
Sweaters should be folded. Shoes and Hats should also be sorted first by color, then by style and finally placed in their appropriate spaces.
-
Step 9
Belts and Scarves are best displayed on products made specifically for them.
