Things You'll Need:
- Bookcase
- Books
- Bookends
- Art
- Accessories
- Canvas, metal or wicker bins or baskets
-
Step 1
Although bookcases are designed to hold considerable amounts of books, a bookcase filled end to end can distract from the overall design of the room and make a room seem uneven and heavy. It is best to edit which books are to be displayed; select your most favorite and important books. Ideally, your bookcase looks best when filled no more than three-quarters full.
-
Step 2
If you have a bookcase that lacks in beauty or design, consider painting the back wall of the case or adding patterned wallpaper to give it interest.
-
Step 3
To organize your books for visual appeal, arrange them according to height or color.
-
Step 4
For more visual appeal, line some books side by side and stack some in small stacks.
-
Step 5
Canvas bins and boxes or neatly designed rectangular baskets provide exceptional storage options and can be used for magazines, spare blankets or other items that you wish to "hide" from view.
-
Step 6
Bookends are fabulous and can be 'made' from anything that carries enough weight to keep your books in place. Some wonderful options are sculpture, vases, picture frames, glass jars or hurricanes and antiques (perhaps an old radio, music box or industrial container.) Experiment with different sizes and shapes of accessories yet be continuous in your concept. A well appointed bookcase will radiate intelligence and creativity.
