This is a lengthy process, but will be loads of fun for a birthday or holiday party.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • newspaper
  • flour
  • large balloon
  • candy or small toys
  • paint
  • knife
  1. Step 1

Take a stack of newspaper and tear into long strips about an inch wide. Save a few newspapers to tear into different size strips if you need them later.

  2. Step 2

In a large bowl mix flour and water until it makes a runny paste.

  3. Step 3

Inflate your balloon. Large, strong balloons work the best.

  4. Step 4

Dip the strips of newspaper in the flour mixture and immediately lay them flat on the balloon. You will do this until you have completely covered the balloon in one layer of newspaper. Let dry overnight.

  5. Step 5

The next day add another layer of newspaper strips to your balloon. Let the layer dry overnight. Continue adding layers each day until you have three layers over the balloon and there are no holes showing. Let dry completely.

  6. Step 6

When the newspaper covered balloon is dry poke a hole through the newspaper with a strong push pin and pop the balloon.

  7. Step 7

Cut a hole in the end of the piñata large enough to where you can get the balloon pieces out and add candy or small toy prizes through the hole.

  8. Step 8

Cover the hole with a layer of newspaper dipped in the flour mixture. Add two or three layers to the spot and let dry.

  9. Step 9

Paint the outside of the piñata with colorful tempera paint or another paint of your choice. Spray paint can be used.

  10. Step 10

Thread a piece of fishing line through the piñata with a strong needle and use the fishing line to hang the piñata.
