Whether it is an election year or not, it’s best to have a clear understanding of how to select a presidential candidate. There are important things to include in your decision and a ton of minor things to leave now when making your presidential decision. Why not take the time to analyze the candidates before making a decision? Here are a few things to consider when choosing the right candidate.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Forget party alliances. Most people get into the habit of voting party line. If your parents and grandparents and great grandparents were of a particular party, there seems to be an unspoken rule that you should vote for the candidate of that party. Why not buck the system and actually vote for a candidate because you believe in what the candidate says.

  2. Step 2

Determine what issues are important to you. Once you’ve zeroed in on the issues that are to you, then look to see how the candidates view those issues. After you’re satisfied with the way the candidate will resolve issues important to you, then broaden your scope and see how the candidate views your community, your state and of course, your country. How a candidate handles issues is more important than whether or not he inhaled in college.

  3. Step 3

Think globally. No longer can American citizens remain walled off from the rest of the world. The presidential candidate you vote for not only America but also the rest of the world. Consider the candidates global views.

  4. Step 4

Ignore the small stuff. Whether a candidate is tall, short, fat or skinny doesn’t amount to a hill of beans when it comes to running the country. Too many times voters get caught up in the minutia and forget to look at the big picture.

  5. Step 5

Do some research. And don’t let the media tell you how to vote. Take some time to research the candidate. Look at things like the candidate’s voting history, affiliations, community work, educational background, mentorship and other factors that helped to build the candidate’s character. Find out if the he is truly worthy of your vote.

  6. Step 6

Look at their choice for Vice President. Ask yourself the question; if anything were to happen to my presidential choice, would the Vice President be able to successfully run the country?

Tips & Warnings
  • Many Americans take more time deciding what to eat for dinner than they do voting for the President. It’s time to make a few changes.
