How to Prevent Yourself From Getting Burned in the Kitchen

Keep safety tips in mind when in the kitchen.

If you are a person who loves to cook, you may spend most of your time in the kitchen. If necessary precautions are not taken while in the kitchen, there is a possibility that you or someone else will get burned.

Things You'll Need

• Pot holder/oven mitt

Instructions

1. Hold the pot handle with a pot holder when you are stirring the pot.

2. Stay back when opening the oven door.

3. Turn the pot handles away from you when you are cooking. It is easy for an accident to happen if the handles are sticking outward, especially when children are around.

4. Lift lids with a pot holder. Do not stand with your face over the pot when you are taking the the lid off.

5. Use a long fork and avoid standing over or close to the hot oil when frying.

6. Follow the required amount of time specified to prepare food in the microwave -- and to let it rest before removing.

7. Remove items from ovens and microwave ovens with oven mitts.

8. Move pots with hot liquid carefully and use pot holders.

9. Keep rugs away from the oven and stove areas.

10. Open covered microwaved items slowly and away from you, allowing the steam to escape safely.
