Want to win this years Halloween costume contest? After reading this series, you'll know everything you need to make your own prize-winning paper mache Mickey or Minnie mask.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Punching Ball/Balloon
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Newspaper
  1. Step 1
    Punching Ball Balloons
    Punching Ball Balloons

Buy and blow up a punching ball balloon. Because of their size and thickness, you need punching ball balloons (vs. standard latex balloons). You can blow up a punching ball large enough to fit comfortably over your head without becoming so taut that it bursts during the paper mache process.

  2. Step 2
    Strips of Newspaper
    Strips of Newspaper

Prepare newspaper by cutting or ripping it into strips. Strips should be 1-2" W x 7-9" L.

  3. Step 3
    Paste
    Paste

Mix flour and water to make your paper (or, papier) mache paste. The mixture should be comprised of 1 part flour, 2 parts water. The proper consistency is that of thick glue. Add a tablespoon or so of salt to help prevent mold. Then, stir well to remove any lumps.

Remember, you will be applying the paper mache in several layers - each one AFTER the previous layer has fully dried. If you do not want to store the paste, mix it in smaller batches.

  4. Step 4

Dip newspaper strips into paper mache paste and apply strips to punch ball balloon. Think moderation. DO NOT paper mache the entire balloon. Remember to leave an opening (large enough so that you will be able to place the completed mask over your head) at the bottom of the balloon.

After each layer dries - usually overnight - apply the next. The more paste you apply to each strip of paper, the longer it will take a layer to dry. You should apply a minimum of 3 layers.

Tips & Warnings
  • I recommend adding a layer of very sheer fabric in between layers 2 and 3 ofthe newspaper. Apply it the same way you apply the paper. It will make your mask stronger.
  • You can purchase punch ball balloons at party stores or online.
  • If you are not interested in making your own paste, you can use liquid starch or an instant paper mache paste like Activa Celluclay, which you can buy at craft supply stores or online.
  • If you follow my instructions, the balloon shouldn't pop before the paper mache has hardened sufficiently. However, if this is the first time you are attempting a project like this, consider starting off with two punching balloons.
  • My references to Celluclay and liquid starch are for your information. I have only made paper mache masks using my own flour/water/salt paste.
