You can preserve pears for use in the winter by canning them as pear butter. Pear butter is wonderful on toast or mixed into hot cereal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 to 7 pounds organic pears (approximately 20 medium pears)
  • 2 C Unrefined Raw Organic Sugar
  • 2 C Unrefined Raw Organic Honey
  • 1 t Grated Orange Peel
  • 1/2 t Nutmeg
  • 1/3 C Organic Orange Juice (freshly squeezed is best)
  1. Step 1

Wash the pears. I like to wash produce by spraying it with white vinegar, rinsing, then spraying with hydrogen peroxide and rinsing again.

  2. Step 2

Cut the pears in half and remove the seeds.

  3. Step 3

Puree the pears in a blender being careful not to liquefy. You may add water if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Add the pureed pears to a stock pot and simmer with remaining ingredients stirring frequently to prevent burning. When the pear sauce is thick enough to form a lump on a spoon, the pear butter is done.

  5. Step 5

Using a jar funnel, spoon the pear butter into sterilized jars. Leave 1/2 an inch of space at the top of the jar. Place sterilized lids and rims on the jars.

  6. Step 6

Process the jars of pear butter in a water bath canner for at least 10 minutes. Remove the jars from the boiling water and allow them to rest undisturbed overnight. The jars will begin to seal after a few hours.
