How to Make Cream Cheese Frosting for your Red Velvet Cake

  • 1 - 8 ounce pkg of cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 1 box of powdered sugar
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter (or margarine), softened at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (preferably clear)

Instructions

      Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth.

      Add box of powered sugar and mix well, slowly at first.

      Mix in vanilla extract.

      Spread on a cool cake.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add chopped pecans to the cream cheese icing, if you prefer.

  • Watch out for a powdered sugar cloud if you start the mixer on too high of a setting after you dump the box in.

    This is a great recipe. My cousin made a red velvet cake for her daughters bridal shower. Cream cheese frosting is the best icing for a red velvet cake. At the request of the bride the cream cheese icing was made minus the vanilla extract. I had my doubts but surprisingly it was very good.
