Need a great tasting, distinctive yet subtle frosting? This is one of the traditional frostings for the legendary Red Velvet Cake.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 stick of margarine (softened, not melted)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract (preferably the clear kind)
  • 3 tablespoons of flour (you may substitute a gluten free version if you are celiac)
  • a dash of salt
  • 1/2 cup of warm milk
  • Mixer
  • Mixing bowl
  1. Step 1

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl.

  2. Step 2

Beat 8-10 minutes until fluffy, scraping down periodically to make sure all ingredients get incorporated.

  3. Step 3

Add frosting to your cooled cake layers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clear vanilla extract keeps the color vivid white.
  • If the milk is too warm, it will melt your butter.

on 10/7/2008 Sounds simple enough. Will have to try instead of always resorting to can icing. Thanks for posting!

on 10/3/2008 That icing sounds easy to make. I bet it does make a plain cake taste "not so plain" anymore. Thanks for the recipe.
