Provide a lot of socialization for your Shiba Inu. The younger the dog, the better. Shibas are mentally and physically tough dogs and do not back down from other dogs. The more socialization they receive as puppies, the more accepting and stable they will be around other dogs. The best time to socialize with other puppies is between the ages of 8 weeks and 4 months.

    • 2

Manage your Shiba Inu. Some important things to consider are crate training and getting a fence for your yard. A Shiba Inu puppy can wreak havoc when left alone, and a crate can greatly help you with this. Being an independent dog, Shibas tend to ignore their owners until they are trained. A fenced-in yard can greatly help in case your Shiba sneaks out the door or gets loose.

    • 3

Establish leadership with your Shiba Inu. Shiba Inus are tough dogs and need strong leadership. Leadership can be established by controlling the activities that are important to them, which include: playing, eating, sleeping and social contact. Control these activities and you control your Shiba. Do not use harsh methods; harsh methods can backfire and cause aggression.

    • 4

As I mentioned, start training early and teach the six basic commands, focusing on the come command. The six basic commands are: sit, down, stand, stay, come and heel.

    • 5

Train your Shiba Inu using a reward-based system. Rewarding good behavior makes the behavior stronger and stronger. Ten minutes a day is all you need to do.

Tips & Warnings

  • Train in short, positive sessions.

  • Use treats your dog really likes.

  • Never train when you are stressed or tired.
