Make decisions about your spending

Controlling your money is about developing good spending habits. This article will show you simple, but effective ways to control your spending.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the difference between a Want and a Need. You Need food - you Want dessert. You Need a way to get to work - you Want a certain type of car. You Need clothing - you Want a particular brand or the latest style. Having wants is ok! Everyone wants things and no one gets everything they want. Think about what is really important to you and your family. Make a conscious choice about how you spend your money.

  2. Step 2

Stop impulse buying. Stores spend a lot of time and millions of dollars finding ways to make you buy more stuff. Don't fall for their traps! Make a list before leaving your home and stick to it!

  3. Step 3

Buy now, pay now! Don't use credit unless you know you can pay the bill off when it comes. Be honest with yourself about this! Housing is an exception, but don't buy more house than you need or can afford. Make sure you can make the payments.

  4. Step 4

Sleep on it. Stores want you to buy NOW because they know if you wait you may change your mind. Make a rule to wait 30 days, one week, or even one day before buying something you want. Take time to compare prices and options to get the best deal. This simple step can save you tons of money!
