Installing a DSL Modem & Router

A DSL Internet connection is great if you want fast reliable access to the internet. Not only is it easy to set up, it is also easy to use. Adding a router to the mix is just as simple. With a router, up to four computers can share the same DSL connection. After just a few minutes of work, you can be online and ready to download whatever you want at remarkable speeds.

      Put phone line filters into all of the phone lines in your home not being used by the DSL. They may come with the modem if you purchased the modem from your phone company. If not, you will have to buy them yourself. You need them in order to be able to use your phone line to speak on the telephone with as well as run DSL.To install them, just plug the filter into the phone jack, and put the phone cord into the filter.

      Plug your DSL modem into a power source. Turn it on. It should take a few moments to light up.

      Plug your DSL modem into the phone line. Make sure this phone line doesn't have a filter.

      Plug the router into a power source, and turn it on. It may take a few moments to warm up.

      Plug an Ethernet cord into the DSL modem's Ethernet port and the router's Ethernet port on the back of the router near the power plug and the power switch. Do not use one of the four Ethernet ports on the side of it.

      Plug an Ethernet cable into one of the four ports on the router and into your computer's Ethernet port. You can plug up to four computers into the router, but you will need a separate Ethernet cable for each one. Make sure your computer's Wi-Fi sensor is turned off if it has one. Otherwise, you may be using that to get online instead of the DSL modem.

      Launch your computer's browser and go online. You and up to three other computers now have DSL.
