If you are planning an overnight ski excursion with a party of four or more, you can avoid the added weight and inconvenience of carrying a tent. Instead, you can create a shelter out of any old tarp, ski poles and skis. Here’s how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 Sets of Ski Poles
  • 5 Skis
  • Tarp
  1. Step 1

Make ski poles into bipods by crossing them at the top and anchoring them in the snow. Use the wrist straps to wrap the poles to each other.

  2. Step 2

Make four bipods in the shape of a square.

  3. Step 3

Lay one ski across each of the two opposite bipods.

  4. Step 4

Lay one ski across the frame formed by the first two skis.

  5. Step 5

Place one ski firmly in the ground right in the center of the square and sticking up above the level of the frame.

  6. Step 6

Drape a large tarp over the frame.

  7. Step 7

Pack snow around the edges of the frame to anchor the tarp and keep out the snow and wind.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use blankets, jackets or other bedding inside the tent.
