Install and Use Avast Anti-Virus Freeware

Avast has long been recognized as one of the web's best antivirus programs, and it doesn't hurt that it is completely free for home users. It's fairly easy to install and use, and it is definitely worth your download memory, especially if you don't want to pony up another $100 for the latest version of Norton Antivirus.

From Quick Guide: Anti Virus Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Avast Antivirus homepage--see Resources. Once it is loaded, go to the "Desktop Solutions" tab at the top of the page.

  2. Step 2

Go to the left on the next page and click on Home Edition. You will then be brought to a page where you can either download the software directly or register. Click on the register tab.

  3. Step 3

Enter your email address, your name and confirm that you are only using the program for personal use. Click the Submit button and wait for an email. Leave this window open.

  4. Step 4

Once you recieve your registration key, go back to the registration/download page and click on Download. When the pop-up window opens, make sure to save the binary file to your desktop.

  5. Step 5

Run the setup program that you just downloaded and confirm all of your information. When prompted, make sure you select the typical configuration, unless you are comfortable customizing antivirus software.

  6. Step 6

Once the installation has finished, restart your computer. After your computer boots back up, open Avast and insert the registration key that you received in your email.

  7. Step 7

Set your antivirus auto-scan. I find it is best to pick a weekly time when you know your computer will be on but you won't be doing anything important. After you set other preferences, you'll be done and Avast will take care of your computer's protection all by itself.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't have to register Avast before you download, as you will have a 60-day temporary license. Still, I find it saves a lot of time, and it's just a lot easier to do it beforehand so you don't have to worry about it later.
