Anyone starting a new website may learn that it can get expensive --- quickly. Even though securing a domain name can cost you as much as hundreds of dollars each year, it is possible to obtain a domain name for free if you know where to look. Free domain names will normally have less frequently used extensions than .com and .net.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a website that offers free domain name registration. Some sites that offer free domain name registration are Microsoft, Co.CC and Wix.

    • 2

Register with the site of your choice. You will need to provide personal information, such as your your name and email address. Some websites require you to verify registration by following an email link.

    • 3

Enter your chosen domain name into the box that says "Check domain name." This will run a check to see if the name is available. If your domain name is already taken, you will get a message instructing you to choose another domain name. Some sites will give you suggested alternate names for your domain.

Choose "Accept" when you find an available domain name that you like. The domain name will become yours and will appear under an account tab titled "My Domains," "Your Domains" or "Domain Manager."
