How to Hike Piestawa Peak in Phoenix

Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts have been loyal visitors to Piestewa Peak in Phoenix, a hiking trail and park area in the northeast Valley, for many years. Piestawa Peak offers two hiking options: a steep, mostly vertical mountainside trail that leads to a pinnacle with dazzling city views, or a gentler trail that winds around the base of the mountain peak, but still affords a view of the city from on high. While visiting Phoenix, a hike up one of the Peak’s two trails is a great way to fit in a workout while on vacation. And for newcomers and those who want to get back into shape, regular visits will do the trick.

Instructions

    • 1

Beat the heat and arrive early for a sunrise hike. The park opens at 6 a.m. Bring plenty of bottled water, and wear good hiking shoes or tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. Restrooms are located at the base of both trailheads. There is no admission fee to enter the park, or for parking.

Gauge your fitness level before choosing a trail. The Summit Trail is just over 1 mile, but it’s pretty much straight up the mountain. There are benches to stop and rest at regular spots along the route, however. Take an easier route and hike the Circumference Trail, a loop trail that’s just under 4 miles and ascends the mountain gradually. The views are nearly as good, and kids and dogs can go along on the route. It is also much less crowded than the Summit Trail. Plan about 2 hours to hike either trail.

    • 3

Expect a crowd during peak times. The park’s hiking trail, especially the main summit trail, can be busy on early mornings and throughout the day during the cool winter months. You won’t be hiking solo on weekend mornings, either. Dozens of experienced hikers make a daily passage their morning workout, and during prime tourist season, November through April, many visitors also come to use the facilities.

Bring a camera. Not only can you snap pics of the city view from the top, but you can see plenty of desert flora and fauna on the way up. Bring your own food and drink, too. There are no facilities (other than restrooms and a few picnic tables) at the Peak.

    • 5

Park in the first lot to hike the Summit Trail, and if you’re planning to do the Circumference Trail, head to the last parking area at the Peak. The trailhead begins there.
