Step 1
Install the child safety car seat. Read the user guide to safely install the new seat. Take the car to a child safety car seat inspection station so that the car seat can be tested for safety and proper installation.

Clean the inside of your car by vacuuming the upholstery and carpets and wiping down all surfaces. Take special care to make your car as close to being dust free as possible. Babies can be sensitive to dust and dirt.

Remove any items from the car that could potentially move around in the car if there was an accident or if the brakes are applied suddenly. Any necessary loose items should be placed in the glove box or other compartment so they cannot move around freely.

Step 4
Install a child safety mirror, available at most department stores, pharmacy stores and other locations. The mirror makes it possible for the driver to see the baby the rear view mirror.

Step 5
Place a spare blanket and diaper bag with essentials in your car. These items can be used if there is a roadside emergency such as your car breaking down or being stranded by severe weather conditions.

Step 6
Perform a basic inspection of your car. Have a full tank of gas before heading home with the new baby. Check all your fluid levels in your car before going to the hospital. Test the tire pressure on your tires to make certain they are inflated to safe levels.
