How to Disable Internet Connection Sharing

Internet connection sharing is a feature in Microsoft Windows operating system. It allows your computer to network with or connect to other devices, networks or the Internet. Internet connection sharing allows you to exchange information with others by connecting to other devices using Ethernet cards, modems, Firewire, Bluetooth and other communication technologies. You can disable Internet connection sharing if you don’t want your computer connecting to any other device.

      Go to Control Panel

      Turn on your computer and log in as Administrator. Click Start on the taskbar and go to Control Panel.

      Go to Properties of your Network Connection

      Click Network Connections. In the new window that opens, select your network connection. This can be dial-up, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or Cable broadband connection. Right-click your network connection’s icon, scroll down and click Properties. Click on the Advanced tab.

      Uncheck the box next to Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection, under Internet Connection Sharing section.

      Click Ok to close the window. Click Ok again to close Control Panel window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disabling your Internet connection sharing doesn’t remove it from your computer and you can re-enable it by following above steps. In Step 4, you simply click the check box to enable it.

  • Be careful about disabling the internet connection sharing feature in your computer. Make sure you can successfully log into your computer again as Administrator to re-enable it should you need to.
