How to Take Care of a Pet After Surgery

Owning a pet that has to have surgery can be scary, but once your pet is home, it’s good to know how to take care of it. From spaying and neutering to emergency surgery, knowing what to do is important for your pet’s well-being and healthy recovery.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the doctor’s orders. Find out from your veterinarian exactly what precautions they feel you should take when caring for your pet after surgery. Be sure to get any prescriptions and give them to your pet by following the instructions printed on the medicine or your vet’s instructions.

    • 2

Have a quiet place. Your pet will most likely be groggy and not feel very well, so have a comfortable, quiet place for it to rest without noisy interruptions or excitement. A favorite bed that is away from other pets or children can be an ideal place. Be sure your pet is near you so that it doesn’t feel alone or scared while it’s recuperating.

    • 3

Be aware of any problems. Knowing when problems first arise can be the difference in your pet’s recovery. Have knowledge of changes that you should be conscious of. It’s normal for your pet to act a little different right after surgery, but ask the veterinarian about changes that are not normal so that you can react accordingly.

    • 4

Pay attention to incisions or wounds. If your pet has had surgery that required an incision or a wound repair, make sure that you take notice of any swelling, redness, fluid leakage or general difference in when they first came home. Call the vet immediately if you notice anything out of the ordinary. Most veterinarians are on call and can put your mind at ease if you feel it’s an emergency. If your pet has had surgery to their eyes or ears, be sure that no debris gets into the operated area.

    • 5

Monitor your pet’s progress. Pay attention to your pet’s recovery period. If you feel that too long of a time period has gone by without your pet perking up or acting normal, call your veterinarian for advice.
