Identify and Care for an Abba Dabba Do Hosta

The Abba Dabba Do Hosta is a hardy, perennial ground cover plant. The cultivar is Abba Dabba Do. It is a low maintenance plant that grows in zones 4 to 9. It has an AHS heat zone of 2. Flowers are usually lavender or white and bloom in mid- to late summer. This plant needs a sandy/clay loam mixture with a pH of 5.5 to 6. 5.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify the Abba Dabba Do Hosta by the large leaves. They may be round or lance-shaped, and they may be any color from yellow to blue to green. Sometimes they have white, yellow or green markings on the margins. Leaves may grow to 12 inches long and may be oval- or heart-shaped. The plant grows to four or five feet tall, and is usually about two feet wide.

  2. Step 2

Test the soil with a soil testing kit. Check for the proper pH. Amend the soil as needed, based on the soil test. Plant the Abba Dabba Do Hosta in deep to partial shade. Seven to ten days prior to planting, work two to four inches of compost into the soil. This will improve water retention and fertility.

  3. Step 3

Water the Abba Dabba Do Hosta at least once a week. This plant needs at least an inch of water each week, so be sure to water deeply. Heavy watering once a week is better than a little every day–when you water just a little bit, the water does not reach the deeper roots and makes the plant weak.

  4. Step 4

Fertilize using a water-soluble, quick release fertilizer or an organic fertilizer such as fish emulsion. If you use the water-soluble fertilizer, you can generally fertilize every two weeks. If using an organic fertilizer, be sure to read the package, as each brand has different strengths.

  5. Step 5

Keep pests and disease at bay by keeping the weeds down and watering the Abba Dabba Do Hosta from the bottom. Pruning away dead or old growth also helps to keep pests away. Introduce ladybugs to your garden to help in bug control.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Abba Dabba Do Hosta is deer and seashore tolerant.
  • Snails and slugs love hosta. Bait three to four times a year.
