If you want a job in the writing industry, then it will almost be necessary that you have writing samples. Employers will observe your skill, experience, and your voice that appears in your writing. It is important to put together a professional and well-organized portfolio when applying for a job.
Things You'll Need
- Binder with rings
- Samples of your writing
- Copy of your resume
- Laminating paper
- Plastic sheet protectors
Purchase a binder with rings at a retailer such as Wal-Mart or Kmart. This will hold your current writing samples.
Take all of the writing samples that you plan on using for your portfolio and have them laminated or buy plastic sheet protectors to place them in. Be sure the sheet protectors have holes to put them into the binder.
Create a cover sheet and a table of contents that displays the titles and a small description of your samples. Be sure to include a writing resume in your portfolio, as well. If you have have any of your writing published online, create a page of links that show where your work can be found.
Place all of the contents in your binder neatly. Place the cover page first, then the table of contents, a copy of your resume, your writing samples, and then a page of links that shows where your work has been published online.
Purchase a flash drive or a disk to place copies of all of your writing samples on. If you write online, create a Word document showing links to all of your current work online.
Give a copy of your portfolio to potential employers.
