1
Have diamond wheels/points and silicon carbide grinding stones or cutters in various sizes specifically designed for glass work. Your drill should also have the capability of reaching the recommended speed of 25,000 rpm.
-
2
Find a piece of practice glass to experiment with before proceeding to your final project. If using a clear piece of glass, tape your design to the back of the glass, facing up.

3
Place the first bit securely into the rotary tool. To outline, use the diamond point bit to outline the design and the grinding stones to give depth. Make sure each bit is tightly secured before using to avoid vibrations that might damage the glass. Place the drill carefully and gently against the glass, and trace the design. Practice with each bit, cutter, point or wheel until you are confident in what each will create before beginning your final project.

Try different materials to etch with. Eggshells, candles and gourds can also be "etched" using the same basic bits and accessories.
