Halloween is about all things creepy. Certainly mummies that have spent hundreds of years rotting in a tomb fit that description. That is what makes them one of the more popular Halloween symbols. There are several ways to make some mummy decorations to celebrate Halloween, but one of the best is a mummy shrinky dink. The mummy starts out regular size and then shrinks when placed in the oven. This simulates what happens to a mummy over the years it spends in a tomb.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shrinky dink sheets
  • Oven
  • Cookie sheet
  • Scissors
  • Pencil crayons
  1. Step 1

Get some shrinky dink sheets. You need one sheet per person, though they are sold in packages. You can do that by visiting the shrinky dink website (see Resources). Just click on "Shop Online" and pick which package you prefer.

  2. Step 2

Lay your shrinky dink sheet rough side up on your table. This is the side you need to work on. If you feel both sides you will see that one is rough and one is smooth.

  3. Step 3

Open your pack of pencil crayons and take out the white pencil crayon. Draw a large chalk outline of a dead body on your shrinky dink paper. This is the outline of the mummy. Make it large so that it has room to shrink later on.

  4. Step 4

Color in your mummy with the white pencil crayon. Then add some black lines to look like the edges of the cloth wrappings. You may also want to draw in some dark spaces for the eyes. If you want you can add in some red to look like blood coming through the wrappings.

  5. Step 5

Cut your mummy out with a pair of scissors, but leave a free space around the mummy to make up for the shrinking.

  6. Step 6

Place your mummy on a cookie sheet. Make sure that it still has the rough side facing up.

  7. Step 7

Heat your oven to 325 degrees before placing the cookie sheet inside. Place the cookie sheet inside for one minute and then remove with pot holders.

  8. Step 8

Allow the mummy time to cool before using as a decoration.

  9. Step 9

Allow the mummy time to cool before using as a decoration.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut a piece of magnet and stick it on the back of the mummy to place it on your fridge.
  • Punch a hole in your mummy and add a piece of string so you can hang it up around the house.
  • Do not leave your shrinky dink mummy in the oven more than one minute or it will burn.
