Folding a Bandana for the Back Pocket

The bandana in the back pocket style is a fashion statement that started with the “greaser” style in early-to mid-century America. Mechanics, or “greasers,” would carry the bandanas in their back pocket so they could be easily removed and used to wipe their hands after working on oily cars. Now, back pocket bandanas have other connotations—some positive, some negative—but they still serve a function. Even if you are not a mechanic, it can never hurt to be prepared to wipe your hands whenever necessary.

Instructions

1. Lay the bandana flat, turned at an angle to look like a diamond rather than a square.

2. Fold the top corner over horizontally in half to create a triangle.

3. From the fold, fold over 2 inches. Continue to fold toward the point until the entire bandana is about a few inches wide.

4. Fold vertically in half from corner to corner.

5. Tuck halfway into your back pocket, leaving some exposed in the back.
